I was fortunate to meet Ray Gutta at the Red Lounge in Washington, DC. He rapped for about 15 minutes on stage and had provided good beats to rap lyrics on while a room full of dinner people at the bar listened and clapped. He was one of the better rappers I had seen on stage at the club and seemed comfortable performing in DC . .Ray is from Harlem and has a bigger crowd out there . . but I could see a following developing in this area (DMV) within the near future. I got a chance to sit down and talk with Ray about his current work and what he planned to do for the future. This is what he had to say . . . . Azur Mag: The first video "Loophole" . .. who directed that . .was that you? Ray: Yeah . . I directed that . . .Me and my boy . . Sleeze . . Azur Mag: Oh . . ok . . . Ray: Sleeze Double Azur Mag: What kind of equipment did you guys use? Ray: We just used my Canon . ..you know . . . Azur Mag: You used the Canon . . . .and what kind of editing software did you use? Ray: Vegas Pro. . . Yeah . . . Azur Mag: The Sony Vega Pro? Ray: Vegas Pro . . .Sony Vegas Pro . . . Azur Mag: Alright . . there's another guy on youtube named Ray Guttah . . .but it's spelled G-U-T-T-A-H . . you know . .it's spelled with an "H" . . .How do you feel about that guy? Ray: I can't say nothin' about it . .there's a bunch of Ray Guttah's . .but . .I'm an original . . Azur Mag: (Laughs . . .) . . . Ray: (Laughs . . ) You know what I mean . . . . Azur Mag: The soundcloud album is called Gutta Boss . . .Did you record this album in New York or Virginia where you reside right now . . . Ray: Yeah . . .I recorded that in my house in Harlem . . . Azur Mag: Oh . . that was in Harlem? Ray: Yeah . . Azur Mag: OK . . . Was it in a studio . . or did you have your own equipment. . .? Ray: Well . .that was recorded at my house . . . Azur Mag: What kind of equipement did you work with? Was it . . .Pro-Tools . . or anything like that? Ray: Yeah Pro-Tools . . Most definitely . . . Azur Mag: Yeah . . that seems to be what everybody is working with . . . Ray: Good quality . . you know . . . Azur Mag: Everyone I've spoken to, so far, has said Pro-Tools . .. Ray: Yeah . .definitely. . . Azur Mag: Alright . . .Who was Gotti Gee? Was he a real person . . .or . . .? Ray: Gotti Gee? Azur Mag: Gotti Gee . .. yeah . . . Ray: Gotti Gee was a childhood friend . . . Azur Mag: Oh . . ok . . Ray: You know . .who I grew up with . . .a very good dude . .. you know . . .He was very loved . .and stuff like that . . .yeah . .you know . .God bless his soul . . . Azur Mag: Oh . . .He died? Ray: Yes . . Azur Mag: Ok. . .So you talk about it in the song . . or you talk about his death in the song? Ray: Yeah . . that's definitely why we made the song for me and my boys . . . Azur Mag: Right . . . Ray: I . . .ahh. . .produced the beat. . . Azur Mag: Oh Ray: . .and we just like . .we made a song . . .we had to do that . . .You know . . .? Azur Mag: Right . . Ray: He was a big part of Uptown . . .It hurt the whole Uptown . .the whole Harlem. . . Azur Mag: Well . .my most favorite . .I mean . .that's a good song . .but my most favorite song on the album was "6 Styles Free Style" . . . Ray: OK . ..(laughs . .) Azur Mag: Cause . .it . .ahh . . .has a different groove to it. . . Did you record this one later . .after Gotti Gee . . .or before or at the same time as Gotti Gee? Ray: That was actually recorded before Gotti Gee . . . Azur Mag: Oh . .it was before . . . Ray: I put that thing together a little early. . .and stuff . .. Azur Mag: Oh . . .ok . . Ray: I was sittin' in the studio . . .Me and my boy . .Sleezy Double . . you know . . We were just drinking . . . Azur Mag: (Laughs . . .) Is that normally how you record? You just get to drinking . .and you put something together? Ray: Yeah . . I get in my zone . . .My element . . you know . . . .and just take off . . . Azur Mag: Yeah . .that's cool . . .Alright . . ."Where You Was At" had a decent piano and electric guitar sample . . and everything . . How did you record that one? Were they samples . . or did you have live musicians on that one? Ray: From the song . . What song are you talking about? Azur Mag: "Where You Was At" Ray: That was actually a beat . . you know . . .somebody threw me . .like a producer . .you know . . A producer . . but also producers throwing me beats, too . . . Azur Mag: So . .. it's from a producer you know . .or . . .from an album you sampled from? Ray: No .. its like a producer I reached out to . . .Basically because I heard the beat . . . Azur Mag: Oh . . man . . .did you pay him money for it . .or . . . .? How did that work out? Ray: Like Basically . .Like I leased the beat . . .You know what I mean . . . Azur Mag: Oh . .ok . . Ray: You know how some people . . they lease beats . . . Azur Mag: So . .you found him on a web site? Ray: Yeah . . . Azur Mag: Ok . . .Do you know him persoanlly . . or did you just meet him online? Ray: No . .that's just through the web site . . .you know . .but they just kicked it a little bit . .and that was it . . Azur Mag: Oh . . That is really cool . . .How many beats do you actually lease? I mean . . Do you have your own beats? Ray: I produce too . . Azur Mag: You produce too . . Ray: I produced a couple joints on my soundcloud . . . Azur Mag: Yeah . .that's my next question . .were you selling beats. . . Were you selling beats on your soundcloud . .? Ray: Sometimes . . I've got this little thing . . .Sometimes I lease the beat . . and sometimes I give out free - depends. . . you know . .how hungry the artist is . .you know . . .If I f--k with you I throw you a beat . . . Azur Mag: Oh . . ok . . . Ray: You know . .the people I know . .up in Harlem . . .stuff like that . . all of them . . . Azur Mag: I noticed "Turnt Up" was a production . . .with no vocals on it . . .Was "Turnt Up" meant to be sold . . .you know . . .as a production to someone else or is it something you plan on adding vocals to at a later time? Ray: I just made the beat . .but I never . . .I just be sitten there . .you know . .f--k'n with the beat . ..seeing what I'll need to put in there . . .There's no hook to it . . I'll just be making a beat . . .I just do it on soundcloud . .to see what my fans think. . .You know what I mean? . . . and they like the beat . . . Azur Mag: . . .but you don't have a beat web site . .yet . .you just have the soundcloud, right now, right? Ray: Yeah . . .soundcloud . . .I was going to f--k with SoundClick but . . .I ain't really get too deep into that, yet . . . Azur Mag: How does SoundClick work . . .Do you just become . .like a franchise off of SoundClick . . or do they create a web site for you . . .How does that work? Ray: I think someone will bill your page up . . .or something . . .I guess you have to pay a little fee, or something like that . . .I don't know if it's $10 or $20 a month . . .I'm not too sure . . .but you, basically, put your beats up there . . .download it or lease it . .Some people put beats up there . . .some people just to have it . .so they download it for free . . . Azur Mag: Right. . . Ray: You know what I mean . . some producers don't really sweat it . . .Some times when I put beats on soundcloud . . .where people can download the beat . .You know . . .? They hit me up . .like . .can I get this beat . .Sometimes it depends . . .I might have the beat . .you know . . not available . . .but you can still hear it . . but . .most of the time I have the beat so people can download it . . .You never know who downloading your beat . . .but at the end of the day . . my tag is on it . .so you know. .who made the beat . . . Azur Mag: You can actually download the beat from soundcloud? Ray: Yeah . . you can download it . .you can . . .cause they give you an option . . .Do you want people to download it . .or no . .you know what I mean . . .? Azur Mag: I didn't know that . . Ray: Yeah . . Azur Mag: Is there an option to download for a fee . . .I forgot what soundcloud can do . . . Ray: It's basically free. . . . Azur Mag: I've got wix . .wix . . .has a media player . . .and . .you've got to put in your wave files . . .fo the media player . . .but they give you an option where you can charge a fee . . .or you can give the song away for free . . .On wix.com . . . Ray: On wix? Azur Mag: Yeah . . it's a pretty good media player . .but nobody listens to it . . .I created a company out of it . . .and . . I don't know . . .well . .Hey . .Do you have anymore words for your viewing audience? Ray: Oh yeah. . .definitely . . .just stay tuned . . Jiggy Ray Gutta . . .you know . .I've got a lot more coming, man . . .You know. .the music will speak for itself . . basically . . . Ray Gutta would like to send a shout out to Bloc Fam! Ray would also like to say it was really nice meeting the crew from Azur Mag and being able to speak to all his fans from the blog and magazine . . .
